　AUDREY
オードリー・ヘプバーンの大ファンだったデスモンドは、ブルースに「Audrey」という名を付け、ブルーベックと共作名義でアルバムに収めた。　テーマとしてのメロディが当初からあったかどうかは定かでなく、即興での演奏だった節もあるが、晩年にカナディアン・クァルテットで再演した際には、最初のコーラスと最後のコーラスで、ここに収められたものを踏襲している。

1962年３月、JIm Hall抜きのPaul Desmond trio with stringsとして新たに３曲が録音された。その中から「Imagination」を加えたのがこのアルバムで、他の９曲は「Desmond Blue」と同じもの。アルバムデザインなどは同一で、盤面に「Late Lament」と表記されている。CDではこの日の録音「Advise and Consent」2:02 「Autumn Leaves」5:44が加えられている。

　ジム・ホールとのセッションは５９年に始まっているが、レコード会社がRCAに変わって最初のアルバム「with Strings '61」後にクァルテット編成で録音を再開することになった。ブルーベックとのツアー、レコーディングの合間を縫って、１６日間が費やされた。June19, 1961/ June5, 10, 12, 14, 25, 1963 / July 13, 14, 28, 30, August 20, September 4, 8, 9. 16, 1964 / June 1, 1965と集中的に行われたことが分かる。この中から「Take Ten」「Glad To Be Unhappy」「Easy Living「Bossa Antigua」に別けて収録されたが、最初のセッションなどのようにどのアルバムにも収められなかった曲もあり、それは「The Complete Recordings of the Paul Desmond Quartet With Jim Hall」のタイトルで発売されたＬＰ６枚組に収録された。

　ゲストプレイヤーにギター奏者と打楽器奏者（ボンゴ、コンガ）の２人を迎えたメキシコでのライブ盤。バンドにゲストが入ったケースは他にない。ラテン風味の楽曲「シェリト・リンド」「ベサメムーチョ」「ポインシアーナ」「ラ・バンバ」などが演奏されている異色の１枚。

　ブルーベックの溌剌とした元気さに比べ、デスモンドはいくぶん弱々しい。解散前のこの時期、デスモンドはバンドの問題児でもあって、遅刻なども多かったらしい。ハンブルクに住んでいたアルト奏者ハーブ・ゲラーは、前日にデスモンドと再会の時を過ごしたが、翌日にブッキング・マネージャーから「ポールがいない」との電話を受けて。悪名高く「飾り窓」地域などもある歓楽地レーパーバーン（Reeperbahn)を探し回ることになった。デスモンドが精神的にも危うい状況にあったとゲラーは語っている。
